This winter sports area is known for its heavy snowfalls, due to its location in a mountain basin. These large amounts of snow turn this skiing area into a fairy-tale scenery. You also really shouldn’t miss the fantastic cross-country skiing and walking area. The 210km of cross-country loipes offer plenty of opportunities. The famous Salzkammergut loipe has a length of 50km and is called a ‘cross-country skiing paradise’ by many cross-country skiers.

Steirisches Salzkammergut includes Tauplitz, Altaussee, and Bad Mitterndorf. Tauplitz is the largest of the three, and is known to be an authentic Austrian village. It is quiet and has a good atmosphere. Cars are unable to enter the village; some in habitants still use dog sledges!
